Meet the team

Dr Mark Brickley

BDS MscD PhD MOrth RCS (Ed)

I qualified as a general dentist in 1988 from Bristol University. I then worked in general practice until 1991. I became increasingly interested in occlusion and undertook further studies in orthodontics at Cardiff University. During this time I gained a doctorate in Dental Science, an MScD and completed my accredited training leading to membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons (MOrth RCS Ed).

I am fascinated by research, particularly "cytokine expression in tooth movement" (please ask!). I lead the Somerset Orthodontic Study Group and have a Research Associateship at Oxford Brookes University. I am clinical adviser to Bioprecision Diagnostics, a major orthodontic software company. I lecture widely and have published over 50 peer-reviewed academic papers.

Judith O'Hagan

BA (Hons) London, UKCP accredited psychotherapist

I have over 30 years' experience of working with the emotional and mental components of physical injury problems. I am UKCP registered as a psychotherapist and hold an Advanced Diploma in Transpersonal Psychotherapy. I supervise and run training courses for other psychotherapists - visit my website www.judith-ohagan.co.uk.

Martin Young

BSc Hons (Phys), BSc (Chiro), DC, FCC, MEWI

I graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1984 with honours. I then attended the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic, affiliated to University of Portsmouth, graduating in 1996, winning the British Chiropractic Association Award for best academic student. Believing that it is not just at The Headache Clinic that good things come in threes, I am currently pursuing a PhD through the University of Glamorgan.

I have taught at undergraduate level and lectured to postgraduate groups. Since 1996, I have been Editor of Clinical Chiropractic, an international biomedical journal and am the author of Essential Physics for Manual Medicine and Essential Musculoskeletal MRI: A Primer for the Clinician (neither of which are essential reading for patients, unless insomniac). I have also published both peer-reviewed research papers and editorials.

In 1999, I was elected as an inaugural Fellow of the College of Chiropractors. At that time, I became the first chiropractor to be elected to the Expert Witness Institute. I still regularly give expert opinion in cases of alleged malpractice as well as personal injury, particularly those involving cervical spine and temporomandibular injury. I run three chiropractic clinics, in Yeovil (www.yeovilchiropractic.co.uk), Crewkerne (www.crewkenechiropractic.co.uk) and Beaminster (www.beaminsterchiropractic.co.uk).

Claire Ryall

MBACP (Accred) Counsellor/Psychotherapist

I have been in counselling practice since 2003, working in a Somerset comprehensive school. Prior to that I qualified in Youth Work and had a support role with Social Services. I have a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling & Psychotherapy and, in 2009, I gained the accreditation status with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP).

My therapeutic approach is integrative, with transpersonal themes. It is my belief that each client is unique, and has individual needs, values and priorities. We work together to draw on that inner capacity for positive change, which we all have deep down. We may include visualisation, relaxation, Bach Flower remedies and creative techniques to help bring balance, but always in a safe and nurturing environment.

Julia Szalay

DMD

I qualified as a dentist in 1999 at the Semmelweis Medical University Budapest. After graduating I remained at the university to practise dentistry and held the role of clinical doctor of the Pedodontic & Orthodontic Department from September 2001 to September 2004. During that time I gained a qualification in Dental and Oral Diseases (2001) and a specialist degree in Orthodontics (2004).

I practised in various locations in Hungary between September 2004 and March 2008 before coming to the UK and working at a general practice in Taunton, Somerset. In March 2010, I joined the Apex Dental Group in Street, which has a close relationship with the Resolution Practice. I joined The Headache Clinic in 2010.

Amy Burn

MChiro DC MCC PGCert

I graduated from the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth in 2006 with a distinction in my Masters degree. At the end of my internship I was awarded the Flavio Grillo Prize for Best Clinical Proficiency Performance. Following this I completed a one-year postgraduate qualification in chiropractic practice to obtain my DC.

During my teenage years I competed for the Kent and the National Squad for judo and it was then that that I first encountered chiropractic when suffering from an injury to my back. As a long-term sufferer of headaches and TMD, I then developed an interest in this particular area and have personally experienced the huge benefits gained from the multi-disciplinary approach to these conditions.
